Insurance Reimbursement for Out-of-Network Services
All services are self-pay as I am not contracted directly with any insurance company. However, most carriers do offer some degree of reimbursement, typically anywhere between 20-80%, for out-of-network expenses. To assist, I am happy to provide monthly superbills that you may submit directly to your insurer. Because each insurance plan is different, I cannot guarantee reimbursement. Therefore, it is important that you contact your provider prior to beginning treatment to have a clear understanding of potential cost.
The following questions are helpful to ask insurers:
Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
Do I have a separate deductible for out-of-network mental health services? If so, what is covered after the deductible is met?
How much of the fee is reimbursed for out-of-network providers? What is the reimbursement I will receive for individual therapy sessions (CPT 90837)?
Is pre-authorization required for my out-of-network benefits?
Good Faith Estimate
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your healthcare provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
FAQ
What is the first step?
I offer a free brief consultation phone call to learn more about you and what you are looking for in therapy. If it feels like a good fit, we will schedule an assessment in which I gather information to better understand you in your full context. We can then decide on a session frequency that feels appropriate. Therapeutic fit is at the center of my work, and sometimes it can take a few sessions to have a good sense of this. This is a topic I will continue revisit and if it doesn’t feel right, I am happy to assist you in finding another clinician.
Where do you provide services?
I am based in Portland, Maine, and provide both in-person and telehealth psychotherapy. My office is located at 22 Free Street in downtown Portland. I also offer telehealth services to clients located in Maine, Washington, Massachusetts, Florida and Vermont.
What is telehealth?
Telehealth, also known as telemedicine is online therapy provided via a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform.
